Christmas Outfits for Toddler Boys: Classic Looks from Thanksgiving to Christmas
The classic holiday look for little boys, from Thanksgiving lunch to Christmas morning: suspender shorts, a good collar and the knits that keep him warm.

The short answer: for a toddler boy, the classic holiday outfit is still the best one: a collared shirt, shorts with suspenders and knee socks. For Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, add a soft knit over the shirt. Choose warm, quiet colours, such as cream, brown, navy, olive and burgundy, and skip the clip-on tie. A good collar does the same job.
Little boys are the hardest to dress for the holidays. Most stores offer a red sweater with a reindeer on it, or a miniature version of a grown man's suit. There is a lovely middle ground: the clothes boys have worn in family photographs for a hundred years, made soft enough for a three-year-old to sit through lunch in.
What should a toddler boy wear for Christmas?
Build the outfit in three layers, and it works for every occasion from Thanksgiving to New Year.
- The shirt: a cream or ivory shirt with a rounded Peter Pan collar. It frames a small face better than a pointed collar, and it never needs a tie.
- The shorts: shorts with suspenders (the British call them braces) in a check or windowpane. They look smart, they stay put, and children can actually run in them.
- The layer: a cardigan or sweater over the top for warmth, with the shirt collar tucked neatly inside the neckline.
- The finish: cream or navy knee socks and brown or navy shoes.

How do you style suspender shorts on a toddler?
Suspender shorts are the piece that makes a holiday outfit look intentional. A few things make them easy:
- Tuck the shirt in fully, then fit the suspenders over it. On the Oliver Braced Shorts they cross at the back and have a ruched elastic section, so they move with him.
- Let the collar sit on top when he wears the shirt on its own. A Peter Pan collar lies flat over the suspenders; a pointed collar tends to flip up.
- Knee socks, always. They pull the look together and keep little legs warm.
- With a knit: wear the sweater over the suspenders and let it fall over the waistband. The shorts and socks still show below, and it looks neat all day.
A note on the Oliver's cut: sizes 1Y to 3Y are cut as bloomers with gathered legs, and sizes 4Y and 5Y are tailored shorts with a straight leg. Both have the same suspenders and buttons.
What should a boy wear for Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is the warm-up: smart, but comfortable enough to sit at a long table.
- The look: the Henri Double-Breasted Shirt in cream with the Oliver Braced Shorts in brown windowpane. Add the Beaumont Equestrian Cardigan if it's cold.
- A softer option: the Étienne Argyle Shirt, with its pale blue piping and pom-pom buttons, with the Julien Shorts in powder blue corduroy.
Brown, cream and a touch of blue sit beautifully with autumn colours and a Thanksgiving table.

What should a boy wear on Christmas Eve?
Christmas Eve is the dressiest night of the season at home: candles on the table, presents under the tree and the whole family together. It calls for something special, but he still needs to kneel by the tree and pull a cracker at dinner.
- The look: the Laurent Cricket Sweater in Ivory & Burgundy over the Henri Double-Breasted Shirt, with the Oliver Braced Shorts and cream knee socks. The burgundy, forest green and mustard trim looks festive without a single reindeer.
- The collar: tuck it neatly inside the sweater's V neckline, so just the rounded edge shows. It looks more finished than a collar spread over the knit.
- For a very formal occasion, such as a holiday wedding, the Auguste Windowpane Suit with Shorts Set with the Henri shirt is our dressiest look.
Skip the clip-on tie. On a small boy, a rounded collar looks more natural than any tie, and there's nothing to pull at during a long dinner.

What should a boy wear on Christmas morning?
Christmas morning is about knits: something warm enough for an early start and smart enough for the photos before breakfast.
- The Maxence Shawl Collar Cardigan: navy cable with a red and ivory striped collar and wooden toggles. It looks wonderful next to a tree.
- The Sébastien Fair Isle Sweater: warm beige with a snowflake yoke, for a boy who wants to look like winter.
- The Laurent Cricket Sweater: the original, in ivory with pale blue and yellow trim, is ready to ship now.
All of them go over the Henri shirt and the Oliver shorts, so one outfit carries him from Christmas morning to Christmas lunch.
Timing: our Autumn / Winter knits are on pre-order and estimated to ship November 16 to 24, in good time for Christmas. The original Laurent ships in 1 to 2 business days.

Shorts in winter: will he be cold?
This is the most common question we're asked about boys' holiday dressing.
- Indoors (Christmas morning, a family dinner, a church), shorts with knee socks are perfectly warm and are the traditional way small boys have dressed for occasions for generations.
- Outdoors, add a warm coat over the outfit, and keep the knit on.
- The knit matters most. A cotton cable knit like the Laurent or Maxence keeps him warm where it counts.
- Prefer trousers? Every knit here looks just as smart over grey flannel or navy corduroy trousers.
What about brothers and sisters?
If he has a sister, coordinate rather than match. Pick two or three shared colours and give each child their own piece:
- the Sébastien Fair Isle and the Amico Spaniel Sweater both work for boys and girls
- the Laurent sits well beside a sister in cream tweed
Our family photo guide has more on dressing siblings.
What size should I order?
- Classic pieces (shirts, shorts, the Auguste suit, the Beaumont and the original Laurent) come in sizes 1Y to 5Y.
- Our Autumn / Winter knits run from 1Y to 10Y, so older brothers can match.
- To find the right size, measure his height first, then his chest, and match both to our size guide. Between two sizes, size up.
- Try everything on a week before the big day, not the night before.
If you buy one piece
The Oliver Braced Shorts. They make every shirt and knit above look like an outfit, and they work from Thanksgiving to Easter. It's the piece we'd start with.
Frequently asked questions
What colours should a toddler boy wear for Christmas?
Warm, quiet colours photograph best and look festive without trying: cream, brown, navy, olive and burgundy. Keep red as an accent, in a trim or a stripe, rather than the whole outfit.
What is the difference between braces and suspenders?
None. Braces is the British word, and suspenders is the American one. Our Oliver Braced Shorts are suspender shorts, with the suspenders attached.
Should my son wear a tie for Christmas?
For toddlers, no. A rounded Peter Pan collar looks smart on its own, and a tie is one more thing for him to pull at.
When should I order for Christmas?
Our Classic pieces ship in 1 to 2 business days, and US orders placed by December 18 arrive before Christmas. Our Autumn / Winter knits are on pre-order and estimated to ship November 16 to 24.
